We heard about the bees last October from Rotarians for Bees. This week we will hear about the birds from Professor Jean Jacques du Plessis.

Jean is Professor of Corporate Law at Deakin University Law School.

Jean grew up in Namibia, studied law in South Africa, and took up photography as a student. It has been his passionate hobby ever since.

Jean will share some of his many photos of birds with interesting information about each one.

The guest speaker this week will be Mike Flattley, who will be speaking about community science engagement and the translation of scientific practice from research work to "public good" outcomes.

Mike is the CEO of the Royal Society of Victoria, the state's oldest scientific organisation and learned society. Following a career in managing community engagement and strategic communications for the senior offices of the University of Melbourne, Mike joined the RSV in 2015 to help define its 21st century purpose and set new strategic directions. He is the state manager of the Inspiring Australia program, a partnership between federal and state governments to engage Australians everywhere with the scientific process and the excitement of discovery.

This guest speaker will be Kerry Anderson who will be speaking about rural entrepreneurships.

Kerry, a member of the Rotary Club of Castlemaine, is a renowned advocate for rural businesses and entrepreneurs. She was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 2022 and named one of Australia’s Top 50 Regional Agents-of-Change in 2018. Kerry provides a valuable rural voice and helps to share positive stories of rural businesses across Australia. She is currently working on building entrepreneurial ecosystems in regional Australia.

Mitchell's presentation will focus on prostate cancer awareness, and PCFA supportive services.

Mitchell is a Group Leader and Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Anatomy and Developmental Biology and Biomedicine Discovery Institute, Monash University.

The guest speaker this week is Dr Katherine Brabon, Learning Skills Advisor, Faculty of Law, Monash University.

Katherine will be speaking about her second novel, The Shut Ins which is out now. It is a remarkable book about hikikomori, or social withdrawal in Japan.

Katherine’s first novel, The Memory Artist, was published in 2016 and won The Australian/Vogel's Literary Award. It went on to be shortlisted in the NSW Premier’s Literary Awards and Longlisted in the Indie Book Awards.

Katherine was joint winner of the 2019 David Harold Tribe Fiction Award from the University of Sydney and runner up in the 2020 Gwen Harwood Poetry Prize.

Dr Hodgson has been providing volunteer medical work for the past 20 years – in India, in remote Thailand, and now in Nepal. His latest project is the construction of a Mothers & Babies Hospital in east Nepal.

Kay Dufty, the Health Promotion Project Officer for LiverWELL / Hepatitus Victoria. 

LiverWELL champions the interests of people affected by or at risk of viral hepatitis and liver disease.

Kay works largely with youth and Aboriginal communities. She is passionate about social justice and values the opportunities through her work to raise awareness about these diseases and the available services and supports, and to encourage healthy choices at an individual and societal level toward better health outcomes in communities.
